Bayesian Judo

A wonderful post by Elizier Yudkowsky on how he argues with somebody who thinks only God can make a soul (intelligence, emotional being, whatever :-).

Overcoming Bias: Bayesian Judo

It just shows what I have come to realize lately: that most people don’t actually hold opinions because they think (emphasis important) they’re right, but just because they have been so indoctrinated and repeat the words they here in their peer communities. They say words which make them feel warm and cosy inside.

But they never stop to think what they are actually saying, what the consequences of their propositions would be…

It makes you wonder: some people actually give the semblance of being “automatons”: state machines which respond to certain inputs with certain outputs - and not rational, critical beings which try to reflect and think. But then again, it’s not so long in evolutionary time spans since we’ve been climbing trees, so we probably have to be quite content that there are as many smart people as there are.
